Safety First
Basement flooded? Follow these steps.
Recommended safety steps to follow before taking any action in a flooded basement.
01Electric Shock Hazard
Prioritize safety: do not enter the basement if there is standing water. Electrical hazards are a major risk. If you can safely reach your circuit breaker, turn off power to the basement. If you cannot do so safely, contact your electrical utility provider immediately.
02Document the Damage
Capture comprehensive visual evidence (photos and videos) of all affected areas and property before beginning any remediation. This is required for insurance processing.
03Remove Standing Water
Use equipment such as wet/dry vacuums, submersible pumps, or mops to extract water immediately and inhibit structural compromise and mold proliferation.
04Dry the Area Thoroughly
Deploy industrial dehumidifiers, fans, and blowers to ensure total moisture removal. This may take an extended timeframe to fully mitigate mold and mildew risks.
05Contact Your Insurance Provider
Initiate the claim process promptly to notify your insurer of the damage, receive instructions on preferred repair vendors, and verify policy coverage details.
